I just received a used fax machine from a school district that recently purchased a new one. Everything is fine except the indicator light is not lit. It runs perfectly, I just can’t read anything on the screen. Also, is there any way I can get a manual other than printing it. There are 156 pages and I will run out of toner or paper, or both. “Machine Error 77” is an indication of a mechanical malfunction or that the ROM in the machine is detecting a false error. This error may be caused by a surge or power outage.
This error typically occurs in two situations: First, when a number appears in the wrong place within a data field and second when the length is too short after NSLDS converts the length into years.
Check the fax connection
Check for phone line connection issues that might cause fax receiving to fail. Confirm the fax cords are in the correct ports: The phone line should be connected to the 1-LINE port and the answering machine, if used, should be connected to the 2-EXT port on the back of the printer.

ANSWER : Not being able to actually hear the noise, I would guess it is possibly coming from worn gears driving the fuser assembly. Put your ear at the back of the machine and listen for the noise.

ANSWER : Just googled this problem and delved into the innards of the machine. Lo and behold, there was a piece of paper stuck there and I have removed it (with difficulty). So it wasn’t “back cover” at all (which I kept on banging shut of course!). Misleading!

ANSWER : Sometimes turning off and on will allow you to print a few pages. The error is a beam detect error. The only real fix is to replace the laser scanner unit. Could be a loose connector on the scanner or DC controller from the scanner. That’s unlikely. You could try the only other free fix which is to open the scanner assy. and clean all the mirrors inside. The dust could obstruct the laser beam enough to cause the detect error.

ANSWER : Access the internal maintenance mode by pressing the Menu/Set button, then press * 2 8 6 4 within 2 seconds. This should put you in the maintenance mode menu. Enter 80, and then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You will find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.
