How to Identify and Fix Common Problems ?

What is the drum unit? The drum unit transfers the toner to the paper. The laser printer puts the toner on the roller called “The photosensitive drum” inside the drum unit, and then prints letters and images by fixing toner to the paper by heat and pressure.
15,000 pages (1 page/job). There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used and so on. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 15,000 pages.

A drum unit is a maintenance item for your Brother printer (or other manufacturer Laser printer) that will sometimes need to be replaced but not as often as a Brother toner cartridge.
Why do I need a drum? Without a drum unit, the toner powder in the cartridge cannot be transferred onto the page. The two parts work together to create a print! You can`t have one without the other and expect the printer to work properly.
Generally speaking, a toner cartridge contains a dust-like powder that fuses onto a page to create your prints. The drum is combined in the same cartridge as the toner. Where supplied separately, the toner cartridge is basically a container for the toner and a roller for supplying the toner to the image drum.
Many people think their toner drum has gone bad and pay hundreds of dollars to fix or replace it. In reality, it`s just time for a good cleaning. You`ll know the drum is dirty if you notice that the print quality has become blurry and features blank spots or oddly-colored spots despite having full toner cartridges.
Found within any laser printer, a toner drum is a component which transfers the toner powder stored within the cartridge onto the paper. It comes in the form of an electrically-charged cylinder. The printer will take toner powder from the cartridges and apply it on to the drum unit`s roller.
A degraded drum unit can cause streaks, smudges, and blank spots on your printed page even if you just inserted a new printer toner. While a broken drum unit won`t break your printer, it will just fail to stop printing at a certain point.
We have covered several different types of drums, but we have still only scratched the surface of the world of percussion instruments. From drum sets, hand drums, percussion drums, and marching band drums, there`s something for every aspiring musician.
A drum unit is a metal cylinder that has a special coating (green colour) That can receive a static positive and negative electrical charge from the laser within a laser printer. The drum can be seen in the printer as a green cylinder and can sometimes be built into the toner cartridge rather than a standalone unit.
The OPC Drum is probably the most recognizable component inside toner cartridges. Its important job is to receive the image to print from a laser inside the printer and then transfer the image (be it text or a picture) to paper. An OPC Drum has many layers to help it interact with the other components in a cartridge.
You should replace it when your image quality declines and does not improve even after changing your toner. Or simply replace your drum when your printer notifies you to do so. When the replace drum light or message comes on, your printer might stop working without much notice.
Sometimes it`s best to take it to a specialist repairer (see below for contacts), but many repairs can be done in a DIY fashion. Replacement parts can be picked up in shops or ordered online. You can repair many common problems by simply buying spare parts and fitting them yourself, such as: lugs.
For natural skin drum heads, like those on a djembe drum or bongos, small cracks and tears can be filled in with glue, while larger holes could be patched with extra skin. However, both of these methods could change the sound of the drum, and completely replacing the natural skin drum head may have better results.
The Brother machine will display a `Replace Drum` or `Drum Stop` message when the machine has printed approximately 15,000 pages. The drums should be replaced as a set in order to maintain print quality. Unlike the toner cartridges, the drum change is not automatically detected by the machine when they are replaced.
So, the toner cartridge is the container that holds toner particles while the drum unit is the component that holds the image that needs to be printed.
Other Signs and Symptoms

The most obvious is most common on laser color printers and can be detected by a flashing message on the printer display screen. Other signs of a bad printer drum include printing blank pages, printing gray pages and strange sounds coming from the printer as it prints.

Cleaning the inside drum of a washing machine is one of the most important things to preserve your favorite clothes as well as the machine. Furthermore, this can help to avoid bacteria and keep healthy. To preserve the performance of the washing machine and remove any bacteria, clean the drum at least once a month.
The drum unit and toner cartridge shelf life is 2 years if the protective bag is unopened or 6 months after the protective bag is opened. Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges.
Do Drum Units Expire? Fortunately, just like laser toners, drum units don`t expire, so you can safely keep extra units on hand if printing is a core part of your business or routine. The only consumable that expires is ink, which is printed on the cartridge itself.
The larger something is, the slower it moves, and the lower the pitch can be. Put simply, smaller drums will be able to have a higher overall pitch than lower drums.
What effects should you put on drums? EQ, compression, saturation, and transient shaping are common effects we use on drums. Depending on the sound and the recording, gating may be necessary. For atmosphere, we might use convolution or algorithmic reverb, and delay is often applied.

ANSWER : You can, but there are good knock-offs and bad ones. I’ve run into ones that come totally empty. Ones that don’t have the chips installed that identify themselves to the printer. Ones that have sat on a shelf for years and fail on installation. I could go on, but I’m sure you get the idea. I use http://directpreciseimaging.com/ Mostly because I set him up in business and he’s local to me. I have very few problems with his products.
