How to Identify and Fix Common Problems ?

Printer toner is the dry powder found inside toner cartridges. The powder — made primarily of ground plastic — holds a negative charge, and the toner particles are drawn to the positively charged image imprinted on the printer drum.
Other Signs and Symptoms

The most obvious is most common on laser color printers and can be detected by a flashing message on the printer display screen. Other signs of a bad printer drum include printing blank pages, printing gray pages and strange sounds coming from the printer as it prints.

Use an activated toner cloth, stretched tautly, and carefully wipe down the drum exterior to remove loose toner. Then use a cotton ball saturated with 99% pure isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Clean any patches of stubborn toner still attached to the drum. Use toner cloth or lint-free microfiber to clean the print rollers.
Over time, the cycle of repeated charging and discharging, combined with the electrical charges that printers use, can break down the chemicals in an imaging drum. As the chemicals break down, the drum`s power to attract toner becomes weaker, while the edges between charged and uncharged areas become more blurred.
Drum Error typically appears when the corona wire on the drum unit needs to be cleaned or when the drum unit needs to be replaced.
Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem, then replace the drum unit with a new one. The yield of a drum unit is approx. 15,000 pages (1 page/job). There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used and so on.
The life span of a red drum can exceed 40 years.
What`s the difference between a drum unit and toner cartridge? The toner cartridge is the container that holds the toner powder. The drum unit is an electrically charged cylinder that fuses that toner powder onto paper to create text and images. Both of these components are essential for producing a print.
The drum unit may need replacing if you notice the printer producing blurry, low-quality images. Black or colored toner spots on printouts also indicates a failing drum unit. In some cases, horizontal lines may develop across the printout every time the paper passes the failing part of the drum.
Shelf life is a period of time the components can be stored and still be suitable for use. A laser printer drum`s shelf life is approximately two years if the drum is still in its protective bag. Leave your printer`s drum in its protective bag until you`re ready to install the component.
But the replacement of a drum unit is vital to laser printers` health. A degraded drum unit can cause streaks, smudges, and blank spots on your printed page even if you just inserted a new printer toner. While a broken drum unit won`t break your printer, it will just fail to stop printing at a certain point.
Toner buildup on the drum is a common reason for spotty or smudged prints. 1. If the toner and drum unit are connected together, you will need to remove the toner from the drum unit. To do this, push down on the green or blue lever on the drum unit to release the toner from the drum and set aside.
The sponge end of a blocked printer head can be cleaned with only one liquid other than water. This liquid is isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol isn`t strong enough to melt the sponge but is still strong enough to dissolve the ink inside the blocked printer head.
Fill a bowl with warm water (or a mixture of water and vinegar to clean the printhead) and place the printhead directly in it. Let it sit for five minutes or so. Pull the printhead out of the water and use a lint-free cloth or paper towel to remove the dried ink.
Print head cleaning consumes some ink. To avoid wasting ink, clean the print head only if print quality declines; for example, if the printout is blurry or the color is incorrect or missing.
The good news is brake drums are built to last 100K to 150K miles and are easy to maintain. However, the parts inside the drum need to be inspected and serviced more frequently.
The toner may also be compressed inside the cartridge, which may cause the cartridge components to force. As for the toner and the drum, they do not have an expiration date.
Household cleaners and polishes like Pledge can work well, too. You can also use some household items such as vinegar or dish soap. You should mix it with water, and clean the drums gently with a lint-free cloth. Take care to dry all drum parts after the cleaning!
One of the first symptoms of bad or failing drum brakes is unusual brake pedal feel. If the brake drums are worn excessively they can cause vibrations that may be felt in the pedal. Worn drums may also cause shuddering or pulsating that will become noticeable once you step on the pedal.
Higher temperatures will stretch the drumheads, while lower temperatures will make them tighten and become brittle. Cymbals, stands, and other metal elements can withstand extreme temperatures a bit better, but extreme temperatures can impact even these metal parts of the drum set.
Drum brakes have a longer lifespan and typically don`t need replacement as often, but it will happen eventually in the vehicle`s lifetime. Most vehicles have drums as rear brakes, with discs and brake pads at the front.
The fine dust from a toner cartridge can stain clothes, carpets, and skin very quickly. Unwanted stains are undoubtedly annoying but still a far cry from legitimate health concerns.
Toner can be washed off skin and garments with cold water. Hot or warm water softens the toner, causing it to bond in place. Toner fused to skin eventually wears off, or can be partially removed using an abrasive hand cleaner. Toner fused to clothing usually cannot be removed.
The toner collection unit is designed for a single use. Do not attempt to empty the toner collection unit and reuse it. Doing so could lead to toner being spilled inside the product, which could result in reduced print quality. After use, return the toner collection unit to HP`s Planet Partners program for recycling.
