How to Identify and Fix Common printer Problems ?

Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced technical support :

Smudges or dots on printed pages are usually caused by foreign material (paper dust, glue from labels or envelopes, toner residue, paper clips, staples, etc.) sticking to or damaging the surface of the drum unit. Cleaning the drum unit typically resolves this issue.
Make sure the printer platen is not dirty with ink. Unplug the machine from the AC power outlet. Lift the scanner cover until it locks securely in the open position. Clean the machine`s printer platen(1) and the area around it, wiping off any scattered ink with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
When your printer leaves black lines, the lines indicate that there are excess toner powders on the rollers or transfer belt within the printer. As the paper is moved along by the rollers and transfer belt, any excess powder left on them can result in lines being left on the paper.
Check the paper type and quality. High temperatures and high humidity will cause paper to curl. Please refer to FAQs “What kind of paper can I use?” and “What is the recommended paper?” If you do not use the machine often, the paper may have been in the paper tray too long.
If blank horizontal lines are printed on the labels or the print is not very clear, the print head or head roller may need to be cleaned. Follow the steps below to clean the print head and head roller: Clean the print head with the self-cleaning function.
Cotton Swab lightly moistened with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. As a precaution please note: Isopropyl alcohol is flammable and should be kept away from fire or flame. As stated, this cleaning process typically has to be repeated several times to remove certain kinds of foreign material from the drum unit surface.
Regular washing and waxing helps to remove Black Streaks before they get good and stuck. A good regular wax job helps to prevent Black Streaks in the first place. A good layer of wax will help to minimize the way Black Streaks set into the surface. Waxing creates a physical barrier across the surface.
Dots are typically caused by foreign material inside the machine (for example, paper dust, glue from labels or envelopes, paper clips, staples) sticking to or damaging the surface of the drum. Toner builds up on or sticks to these areas on the drum and creates black dots on the printed pages.
Determine the area of the ADF glass strip that needs to be cleaned by lining up the copy with the black vertical line with the ADF glass strip (see red circle in image above). d. Try using a slightly more abrasive cloth, like a coffee filter, lightly moistened with rubbing alcohol or a window/glass cleaning agent.
Check the ink levels

Sometimes, the printer may not print black ink because it is low or empty. You can check the ink levels on the printer`s display, or by using the software that came with your printer. If the ink level is low, replace the cartridge or refill it according to the manufacturer`s instructions.

An error in the cartridges, the heads clogged by dry ink, a very low level in your consumables, a bad connection between the computer and the printer, a damaged cable, a jam in the print queue…, there are many reasons why your Brother printer may stop printing or print poorly even though you have not jumped the ink …
Usually a quick paper setting adjustment will clear up a ghosting issue right away. Run a cleaning – Most printers have a cleaning function built into the machine. Run this a couple of times to attempt to clear up the printing issue. Inspect the drum – Sometimes excess toner powder can stick to the drum.

smudge line across the page 3/4 way down
ANSWER : Only 2 things can cause it, the toner or the fuser. To determine which, you do a half-stop test. To do so, put a sheet of paper in the manual feed tray. Then send a print job while you watch the page. You want to open the lid about the same time that 3/4 of the page has just passed by the toner cartridge. Might take a few tries. This will stop the area with the problem after it passes the toner cartridge, but before it hits the fuser. You look at the paper and if you see the defect, then it’s caused by the toner cartridge. If not, then it is being put on by the fuser. It seems a bit strange to me because normally a defect like that will occur 3 times per page, which is about the circumference of the toner drum or fuser sleeve.
