Canon Pixma MX870
I have a Canon Pixma MX870 that until recently was working just fine. I updated to the MX922 to take advantage of the ‘Airprint’ feature. Now my nozzle tests only show the color bars — no grid at all! I’ve read thru the thread on MP530’s with the same problem and I suspect my drain hoses, dampers or purge unit(s) may need attention. HELP!

Has the printer been unused for so much time?Try to run 1-2 deep cleaning cycles of the PGBK ink.If it doesn’t work, try to take out of the printer all the cartridges and remove the printhead.Take the printhead with the nozzles up and drop on the black nozzles some windex or prepare a solution with 2/3 ammonia and 1/3 DISTILLED water, then drop some on the printhead. If the printhead takes the fluid it means that the printhead nozzles are free, to test it take a tissue on the black printhead, then rotate it with the nozzles facing down and drop some liquid on the PG-BK cartridge plug of the printhead. There’s anyway a little possibility that the problem is not a clog, so try thisTake a tissue of paper and take some alcohol (Better if isoprophil) on itRemove the power cord from the printer and try to clean the internal contacts that touch the printhead, clean also the contacts of the printhead. After this take the printhead into the printer and take if possible a new (original or high quality compatible) cartridge, and run a deep cleaning cycle of the PGBK.Then run a nozzle test to verify.

It`s usually because the printhead inside your printer is clogged or dried out. Like with most printers, Canon printheads can clog due to ink or dust drying up and collecting in the nozzle.
One of the most common reasons behind color printing issues in the Canon printer is an empty cartridge. You should first check whether your cartridge still has ink. First, open the printer`s front door and remove the cartridge slowly and carefully. Look out for its ink levels.
Check the ink levels
Sometimes, the printer may not print black ink because it is low or empty. You can check the ink levels on the printer`s display, or by using the software that came with your printer. If the ink level is low, replace the cartridge or refill it according to the manufacturer`s instructions.
If your PC or the LCD screen on your printer is telling you that your ink cartridges are full but no ink is passing through to the paper, then it`s most likely that you are dealing with a clogged printhead. Blurry documents and images that appear faded are also signs that it`s time to remove the excess ink.
Several factors may cause the product to print blank pages, such as print settings, low ink, or the product itself. Check the following: Make sure the product is placed on a flat, stable surface that extends beyond the base in all directions. The product won`t operate properly if it`s tilted or at an angle.
If your HP printer not printing black ink correctly, here`s what you should do. Using non-genuine ink cartridges. Printheads that have become clogged. Ink cartridges that are defective or empty.
Wipe clean the cartridge carriage where the cartridge connects to remove any dried ink (make sure the printer is off and unplugged). If the printhead is built into the printer, clean where the ink comes out with a damp cloth. Re-install cartridges and run a print head cleaning process.
As long as your printer also has a colour cartridge, all the colours from the colour cartridge will print together to make … BLACK.
If there is plenty of ink and the printer does not print, clean the Print Head then print the nozzle check pattern to ensure ink is ejected properly. If the problem is not resolved after performing Print Head Cleaning twice, carry out the Print Head Deep Cleaning.

STEP 1
Change Printer Preferences in Windows Click start and navigate to the Printers and Devices. Right-click your printer and select printing preferences. Then, click on the Grayscale button in the advanced tab to enable black-and-white-only printing.
Verify the ink cartridge(s) is inserted properly. Some cartridges snap in place, and if they are not inserted fully, the printer won`t print anything. If a lever is moved from its original position to allow for installation of ink cartridges, ensure it is returned to its original position.

Canon Pixma MP610 won't print in black
ANSWER : Printer cleanings use wet ink to clear dried up ink. Yeah, that works real well. The best way to clean the heads is remove all the ink tanks. Next to the tanks on the right, there is a plastic release lever. Pull up on it and it will release the heads. Reach in and pull them out. Take the heads over to the sink and run hot tap water into the screen for the black and then turn it over and run it over the heads on the bottom. Repeat a few times and reinstall.
