HP OfficeJet G55

Experienced technical support provide their insights in answering this question :
Hope someone can help me with a HP Officejet G55 “problem”. I took my G55 apart and cleaned the service station as explained here on this site as it was obviously full of ink “goo” and the printer had refused to print in the middle of a printing, displaying a remove black cartridge etc message even though the HP45 cartridge itself showed it was not even half empty. I had no major problems with the cleaning procedure, but after putting it back together there was “the problem”! The Carriage with the ink cartridges gets stuck just before its about to enter its “home base” over the service station and I get a “fix carriage jam and then push enter” on the screen. I can see and hear that it is the service station that gets stuck just before the “cycle run” of the carriage is about to end. You can hear the service station motor gear slip on the plastic gear mechanism of the service station, not being able to move it any further but tries for a moment with a grinding noise and then stops. Is there some sort of time alignment I need to do between the carriage, service station mechanism and service station motor? Like service station pushed to the back, carriage to the far left etc etc. Ive tried a few “scenarios” but the carriage allways gets stuck in the same place with the grinding noise from the service station/motor “gears”! If I move the carriage by hand it goes from the far right to the far left without any problem. Its just when the service station/motor etc is engaged, that this happens. Hope someone can help me with this problem. Thank you.

How to Identify and Fix Common Problems ?

You can only install two black ink cartridges if your printer uses two different types of black ink. If you are trying to install a black ink cartridge in a color cartridge slot, your printer will not function and you could potentially cause damage to the machine.
The quick answer is: Yes, you can (if you own a printer model that allows it) — but you shouldn`t keep printing with an empty cartridge for too long. Why? Because running on an empty cartridge for too long can cause your printhead to overheat resulting in irreversible printer damage.
The other smaller black contains a dye based ink which is used more for photo or image printing.By using the 2 black cartridges the printer is able to produce crisp, dark text and by switching in picture mode it can also then use the smaller dye based ink to produce the highest quality photos.
Black Print Mode allows you to print only with black ink as a temporary emergency measure to minimise the down time in the event any colour inks are expended, even if there is no replacement cartridges available.
Ink is required in all cartridges to print and to perform periodic servicing to prevent clogs and other print quality issues. There is no way to bypass this feature.
Many printer models require at least some ink in all cartridges to keep printing. However, if you`re lucky, your software may allow you to squeeze out the rest of your color ink without using black.
Temporarily Printing with Black Ink When Color Ink Cartridges are Expended. When color ink is expended and black ink still remains, you can continue printing for a short time using only black ink. However, you should replace the expended ink cartridge(s) as soon as possible.
The settings on your printer may allow you to print when one cartridge is empty. Numerous HP printers, however, block-printing when one cartridge is empty. Consequently, you have to purchase an ink cartridge replacement to get back to printing if your printer model doesn`t allow for this.
A typical ink cartridge will yield 250 to 300 pages depending on the color density of the prints. The yield of a typical toner cartridge in a laser printer is between 2,500 and 3,000 pages. Some larger laser printers can even have toners that will yield up to 30,000 pages!
Modern black inks in marking pens are usually mixtures of a variety of colored pigments mixed with different liquids.
Black ink cartridges usually have more ink than color cartridges and cost either the same or less than color cartridges so it is always cheaper to print in black and white.
Now you have your average percentage, here`s an example how many pages you`d get from a High-Capacity HP 301XL Black Ink Cartridge. Page Yield: 480 pages: Printing on 5% = 480 pages (the official page yield). Printing on 10% = 240 pages.
View ink cartridge levels from your printer software, or from the printer control panel. Tap the HP Instant Ink icon on the printer control panel to view ink levels. To check page counts and cartridge shipment status, go to HP Instant Ink.
Whether you use an HP printer or any other, you can make it possible to print in black while your printer screen is showing the color cartridge empty notification. All you need to do is reset your printer first and then, make certain print settings i.e open the option of “Print in Grayscale”.
Go to your computer and click “Print” from the file that you wanted to print. Click on “Properties” and then the “Color” tab next. Select the “Print in grayscale” option by clicking on its checkbox. You can now start printing in black and white.
You do not need to replace ink cartridges until you are prompted to. In general, low ink levels should not impact print quality. Your printer stops and displays a message when ink levels get too low. However, the printer might still perform a limited amount of printing in `backup mode` at low ink levels.
Another factor that could be affecting your colour ink consumption is the amount of printing from a computer, even if the print jobs are black only. Because this machine offers full colour printing, the default setting in the print driver is COLOUR.
Black and white, Monochrome, Black Ink Only, or Grayscale: Uses only the black cartridge to print in black and white. High Quality Grayscale: Uses all colors and black to print higher quality black and white prints.
The HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw uses the standard HP 260A toner cartridges in black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. For more printouts, you can also use the high-yield HP 206XL toner cartridges in black, cyan, magenta, and yellow with the HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw printer.
As the name suggests, ink cartridges use liquid ink to create images and text on printed pages. Whereas toner cartridges use powder, which is heated to create printed documents. Much like the quality of petrol you put in your car, the ink and toner you use in your printer will help it run better for longer.
Open the ink cartridge door, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product. Press down lightly on the ink cartridge that you want to replace to release it, and then pull it toward you out of its slot.
If you`re refilling a standard cartridge, you can put in about 4ml of ink. If you`re refilling a high yield cartridge, you can put in about 10ml of ink.
In general, printers don`t need Cyan or Blue ink to print Black and White. However, there are printer models that use all cartridges to clean the printhead before printing. There are also printer manufacturers who claim that cyan is added to black to create a darker black.
If you have a Word document that contains color text or graphics but you want to print it in black and white or grayscale, you can do so by changing your printer properties. The options you have available depend on the type of printer you have. Click the File tab, and then click Print.
