An international crew of seven people live and work while traveling at a speed of five miles per second, orbiting Earth about every 90 minutes. Sometimes more are aboard the station during a crew handover. In 24 hours, the space station makes 16 orbits of Earth, traveling through 16 sunrises and sunsets.
NASA ensures inventions for space find practical uses closer to home. They often become solutions to different challenges – ones we didn`t set out to solve. Called NASA spinoffs, they help detect breast cancer, protect firefighters, nourish newborns, and more.
A: The Space Shuttle orbits the Earth at an altitude of 120-300 miles. We fly the shuttle to the ISS where we dock and continue work onboard the station. In the past we have taken the shuttle to the Russian MIR space station, and we have used it to visit the Hubble Space Telescope for on-orbit repairs.

The radio connection to the ISS isn`t L-band, it`s Ku band (12-18 GHz) and S band (2-4 GHz), but the principle is the same. We can beam a signal up to the ISS, which has an antenna which lets them receive it, and then their computers can download an email.

Space has no “up” or “down,” but it does have microgravity. As a result, astronauts are weightless and can sleep in any orientation. However, they have to attach themselves so they don`t float around and bump into something. Space station crews usually sleep in sleeping bags located in small crew cabins.
The first rudimentary station was created in 1969 by the linking of two Russian Soyuz vehicles in space, followed by other stations and developments in space technology until construction began on the ISS in 1998, aided by the first reusable spacecraft ever developed: the American shuttles.
